Soil nitrogen accumulation, denitrification potential, and carbon source tracing in bioretention basins

چکیده

Abstract Bioretention basins are one of the most commonly used green stormwater features, with potential to accumulate significant levels nitrogen (N) in their soil and permanently remove it through denitrification. Many studies have investigated N removal bioretention assessment inflow outflow concentrations. However, long-term accumulation denitrification is less known. This study temporal variation total (TN) soils 25 within a 13-year chronosequence, subtropical climate Australia. The subset seven was accompaniment nutrient characteristics. Additionally, stable isotopes (?13C ?15N) were assess changes composition as well identify sources carbon (C) into these basins. Over 13 years operation, TN accumulated faster top 5 cm than deeper soils. Soil density highest an average 1.4 kg m?3, which about two times higher Site age texture best predictors (1 9.7 mg m?2 h?1). isotope values variable among Low ?15N young (-1.02‰) suggested fixation main source N, while older had ?15N, indicating plants primary C; although occurrence amendment also contributed C pool. To improve performance basins, we recommend increasing vegetation at initial after construction, enhancing more frequent anaerobic conditions high profile. These can potential, thus for improving water quality.

Depth of nitrogen fertiliser placement affects nitrogen accumulation, translocation and nitrate-nitrogen content in soil of rainfed wheat

A field experiment was conducted to examine the effects of different depths ofnitrogen (N) fertiliser placements on N accumulation, remobilisation and NO3−-Ncontent in soil of rainfed wheat. Nitrogen was applied on the surface (D1) and inthe 10 cm (D2), 20 cm (D3) and 30 cm (D4) soil layers from 2010 to 2012.Compared with D1 and D2, D3 and D4 treatments obtained significant higher Ndistribution...

Denitrification and availability of carbon and nitrogen in a well-drained pasture soil amended with particulate organic carbon.

A well-drained soil in N-fertilized dairy pasture was amended with particulate organic carbon (POC), either sawdust or coarse woody mulch, and sampled every 4 wk for a year to test the hypothesis that the addition of POC would increase denitrification activity by increasing the number of microsites where denitrification occurred. Overall mean denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA), on a gravimetric...

Sonicated Sludge as Carbon Source for Denitrification

Ultrawaves sludge sonication technology was trialled at Maroochydore STP from February to June 2013. This was believed to be the first fullscale application of mechanical sludge lysis for enhanced denitrification in Australia. The results of the trial confirmed that sonicated waste activated sludge (WAS) could effectively replace the use of methanol as a carbon source for denitrification, and t...

Tracing the source of Beijing soil organic carbon: a carbon isotope approach.

Bulk soil organic carbon concentration and isotopic composition characterize its sources and fate, identify the anthropogenic input of organic carbon into the soil, and trace soil carbon turnover. Coal and/or coal combustion products represent the prime anthropogenic input of organic carbon into three soil profiles located in the vicinity of a steel company. Three profiles positioned away from ...
